Subject: adding encoder
hi Tom
i have old servo drive and motor, that motor have 1500ppr encoder.
i have a important question about whether i can adding second Encoder with 8192ppr to ballscrew .?
motor encoder connected to servo driver and second encoder connect to Kflop..
is simple , but i think Does not match ,because servo motor can detect only 1500 line .
it dont can stop in between two line
please guide me

Hi Amir,

Are your drives of Step/Dir Input type?

The resolution shouldn't need to match.  An encoder will always have the quantization error in any case.

KFLOP uses floating point commanded positions.

i use Kflop/Kanalog
servo driver have only analoge input (+-10v)
my ballscrew have pitch 20mm/rev and servo motor have 1500ppr ,in fact 300pulse for each mm .
i think this package dont have good resulotion for cnc machine .
whats your opinion ?
is it possible more describe about matching this two encoder ?

Hi Amir,

Does your Analog Servo driver have a Tachometer or Encoder Input to control motor velocity?

How is the motor connected to the lead screw?

Yes the resolution seems somewhat low.  It depends on your requirements.  As a general rule I like to have resolution 10X or higher than the desired accuracy.

There is no need to match the resolution.  You may not even need to use the encoder on the motor.

Tom
motor have TTL Encoder, not tacho
i deciding connect motor to lead screw directly because i think pully time and belt dont have good accuracy.
about 8192ppr encoder, is it possible use this encoder with this package ?
whether if use this encoder , cause Increase the accuracy?

Regard
Amir

Hi Amir,

If your motor is connected very tightly to the leadscrew+encoder you should be able to use the encoder on the lead screw.   Accuracy is depends on many things.  Higher encoder resolution will help.  KFLOP can count 1e6 quadrature counts/second.  So very high resolution will limit maximum speed.  In your case 8192ppr = 32768 quadrature counts/rev.

1e6 / 32768 = 30.5 rev/sec = 1831 RPM

1831 RPM x 20mm/rev = 36621 mm/min
